The Adpaper, Who Needs News?

27 Sep 2006 in Advertising, Newspapers by Garrick

“Like many of my geek compatriots, I rarely read a newspaper anymore. Paradoxically, when I do, it’s usually for the ads…..The news part of the newspaper was unread and discarded, a big waste of paper in my case.” - Brian Benz

I’ve often recommend that, when getting into a new hobby, people buy one issue of all of the relevant trade magazines and read the ads. You get a really good feel for a hobby overall by just reading the ads: what’s important to lots of the participants, who the big suppliers are, etc.

For a while, we used to get the Sunday paper and pretty much toss the paper part and go through the sales flyers.
