Bruno Bornsztein, Ben Moore, and I talk about their recently launched project – Curbly.com – a social networking site for sharing DIY projects, tips, and finding help.
After we run through the site, we talk about;

Steven Clift is moderating the 2006 MN Gubernatorial candidate e-dbate. I’ve been following along via the RSS feed. Ever day a new question – perfect.
This is exactly how I like my politics – integrated into how I do everything already (RSS).
The questions are good, the answers are surprisingly good considering it’s a ‘political debate’. I credit Steven’s format: the candidates aren’t live and aren’t in the same room – and his intro kick-off video.
Even a couple questions in, it’s obvious who the serious candidates are (Pawlenty, Hatch). It’s great that the other candidates are running, and kudos to everyone for participating in the e-debate. I still don’t get being a single-issue candidate, just fixing the issue seems like a much more direct way of changing things than gambling on winning an election.
Here’s my long-awaited conversation with Jeremy Messersmith talking about his new album, the Alcatraz Kid ($13.00 PayPal, City Pages review, Pulse review), and playing a couple of the songs of from it – two of my favorites (Day Job, Snow Day) and one of Jeremy’s (Great Times).

Mr. Sponge’s More Debate post @ Minvolved is a good read. Looks like everyone’s at least consistent – for better or worse:
- Ember: I’m a woman, I’m not going to talk about my positions on Social Security and charter schools and I think of the children
- Paul: I’m ethical, I lean to the side, I have a lot of gel in my hair and my campaign ratted out the guy standing next to me
- Keith: I’m progressive and grassroots
- Mike: Here’s what I’m going to do and here’s how I’m going to pay for it
This Saturday – Sept 2nd, Jeremy Messersmith is having a CD release party at the Acadia Cafe.
Jeremy and I sat down for a podcast a couple weeks back talking about his new “The Alcatrez Kid CD” ($13 Paypal). Unfortunately, life got in the way of me getting it up earlier this week.
Crap. I’m sorry. It’s coming. Watch this space.
The Strib’s Steve Alexander is on a Muni-WiFi bashing kick. In Sunday’s Slowdown in the Fast Lane, the angle was how the forthcoming Minneapolis muni-WiFi will make the current cable and DSL offerings look paltry and non-competitive. Oh – and we don’t get the maximum bandwidth out of our current pipes anyway. Really? Muni-WiFi isn’t going to change that.
In fact, I’m not planning to drop my existing offering for the $20/mn muni plan anytime soon. WiFi transfer rates don’t scale well. If anything, the muni plan is a cheap insurance policy – something we can check email on while the main line is uploading podcasts or the weekly backup.
Then today there’s this gem in the sidebar;
But that’s it. No information on what “special” means. If it means 802.11b or 802.11g (i.e. what you already have) then yes Bill, that’s just bad reporting.
I expect so much from our dailies. Maybe I’d be happier if I started thinking of them like soap operas – quantity over quality.

Last night, I popped by the Acadia Cafe to update their podcast settings – it’s been moved to AcadiaCast.com. While testing everything out, Ted surprised me with a pint of Surly Brewing’s new Coffee Bender.
It’s a fantastic beer, one that Omar hinted at during our podcast. The most complex of all Surly’s beers – in addition to their signature hoppiness, and Bender’s oatmeal, the coffee adds a chocolate finish and a contemplative nature to the pint.
Rich Huelskamp built a 100% off-grid, renewable-energy home down in Red Wing, MN. He and I talk about how he got his home down from the average 25kWh/day to 6. Along the way, he goes through the steps to making a urban/suburban home more efficient.
If you’re looking to replace your home’s appliances, Rich recommends picking from ACEEE.org’s list of most energy efficient appliances
